A lot has been stated in the press just a while ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt as a result of the smoking ban in the United Kingdom. Conditions have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for huge tax cuts to help keep the industry afloat. But will the web variation of this quintessential game offer a salvation, or will it in no way compare to its bricks and mortar peer?

Bingo is an ancient game usually played by the "blue haired" generation. However the game of late had seen a recent increase in appeal with younger men and women deciding to hit the bingo halls in place of the discos on a Friday night. All this is about to change with the legislating of the cigarette ban around UK.

No longer will gamblers be permitted to puff on cigarettes while dabbing numbers. From the summer of 2007 all public locations will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most favored areas where many people enjoy smoking.

The effects of the smoking ban can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already prohibited in the bingo halls. Profits have plummeted and the industry is literally struggling for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Obviously they haven’t given up on this ancient game?

The answer is on the internet. People know that they can bet on bingo from their computer while enjoying a beverage and cig and still enjoy monstrous prizes. This is a recent anomaly and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.

Of course betting on on the net can never replace the social portion of going down to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of people the rules have left a good many bingo enthusiasts with little choice.
