A lot has been written in the press not long ago concerning the bingo industry singing the blues as a consequence of the anti smoking law in the United Kingdom. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive aid to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. But does the web variation of this traditional game offer a salvation, or will it in no way compare to its land based peer?

Bingo is an classic game historically played by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game lately had experienced a recent increase in popularity with younger men and women deciding to visit the bingo parlours instead of the bars on a weekend. All this is about to change with the enacting of the smoking ban across Britain.

Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes at the same time marking off their numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 every public place will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most common locations where people enjoy smoking.

The results of the cigarette ban can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo parlors. Numbers have dropped and the industry is beyond a doubt fighting for its life. But where did the players go? Obviously they haven’t abandoned this classic game?

The answer is on the web. Players realize that they can gamble on bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a drink and fag and still enjoy huge prizes. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.

Of course betting on on the internet can never replace the collective portion of heading over to the bingo hall, but for a group of men and women the rules have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
