A lot has been stated in the papers not long ago regarding the bingo industry singing the blues because of the anti cigarette law in Britain. Conditions have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded huge aid to assist in keeping the industry alive. However can the internet variation of this quintessential game provide a salvation, or will it not compare to its real life peer?

Bingo has been an ancient game historically enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had witnessed a recent comeback in popularity with younger people deciding to go to the bingo parlours instead of the discos on a Saturday night. This is all about to be destroyed with the enforcement of the smoking ban throughout UK.

Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes while dabbing numbers. From the summer of 2007 all public places will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most popular places where folks enjoy smoking.

The results of the smoking ban can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo halls. Players have plummeted and the industry is absolutely struggling for its life. But where have the players gone? Certainly they have not forgotten this ancient game?

The answer is online. People realize that they can gamble on bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a beer and cigarette and in the end, enjoy huge prizes. This is a recent development and has timed itself almost perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.

Of course betting on online will never replace the communal portion of going down to the bingo parlour, but for a group of players the governing edicts have left many bingo enthusiasts with no alternative.
