A lot has been written in the press just a while ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the anti cigarette law in Britain. Things have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded massive aid to help keep the businesses afloat. But will the internet variation of this quintessential game provide a salvation, or might it never compare to its bricks and mortar peer?

Bingo has been an familiar game usually played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game of late had witnessed a recent comeback in appeal with younger people opting to hit the bingo parlours rather than the bars on a Friday night. All this is about to be reversed with the legislating of the smoking ban throughout England and Wales.

Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes whilst dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public place will not be allowed to permit smoking in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most common places where people enjoy smoking.

The outcome of the anti cigarette law can already be looked at in Scotland where smoking is already illegal in the bingo parlors. Numbers have plunged and the business is literally fighting for its life. But where did all the players go? Obviously they haven’t cast aside this classic game?

The answer is online. Gamblers realise that they can bet on bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a beverage and fag and still have a chance at big prizes. This is a recent development and has timed itself almost perfectly with the ban on smoking.
